Highlighting a Power Word, ‘is’
Sight words are powerful words to help build independent readers. Teachers often introduce sight words each week for emerging readers to gain fluency. Power words are what we call common sight words in our house because they are all around our world and give us power to read!
I have used many literacy tricks of the trade to help my son, Jack, build his power word memory box. Using highlighter tape is one of his favorites because he can place it over any power words in his book. As it turns out, fine motor skills are also utilized when their fingers have to tear off the highlighter tape. Any type of office supply is always a big hit with children, from Post-Its to highlighters.
All Sapling Book Bundles come with a roll of highlighter tape to encourage emerging readers to find power words. Baby Monkey, Private Eye is the book Jack will reread over and over again. It is packed with common sight words as well is a mystery in every chapter. Remember to play, read, and wonder about our world of words!
